A very common question, not an easy one to answer. From time to time some tattoo artists will take on an apprentice, this can last for 2 to 3 years. You would be expected to purchase your own equipment and sterilising units. The cost of this would be in the region of £4,000 to £5,000. No wages would be paid during this period, you will be working with a professional tattoo artist for 5 or 6 days a week. You will be taught the necessary skills gradually and will begin to put on your own tattoos after about 6 months. It takes around 5 years for a tattoo artists to become fully competent, and able to carry out the various styles of tattooing available today. There are no correspondence courses on tattooing that we know off, if there were we would not recommend them, as tattooing must be taught with "Hands on" experience, tattooing real people on living skin. It is illegal to tattoo without being registered with the local Environment Health Department, this comes under the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions)Act 1982, Chapter 24. If you do not comply, equipment can be confiscated, you are liable to a massive fine (on a daily basis) until you prove you have stopped tattooing. Sterilising equipment must be checked and serviced regularly, all clinical waste must be disposed through a licence waste disposal service e.g. Rentokil Medical waste collection service.

you cannot learn to tattoo in a day, a week, 3 weeks, or a lifetime. the filthy parasites offering courses are sucking money from the ignorance & naievety of tattoo wannabes. it ain't glamourous, it's hard work every day.
A good tattooist will take on an apprentice based on a meeting/feeling they get from the wannabe & their portfolio, if the tattooist wants money, it's already the wrong decision.
I've seen tattoo 'artists' offering courses with 30 years experience, if you tattoo for 30 years & you are still ****, then you should not be spunking money off gullible people for information you don't have.
& stop 'tattooing'.
If it's meant to happen, you will be a tattoo artist & you will work in a good studio, anyone can pick up a starter kit & make a mark on their mate's skin. yes it's a tattoo, & it's also a future cover-up nightmare for a pro.
if you can't see the difference between a arse & art put down your 'guns'.
tattoo courses are full of rubbish, sold by trash.
if you want proof, ask to see their work. it will be ****.
no good artist will become production line whore.
simple.

I think that people wanting to become a tattooist gota have funding behind them ... it must be sooo hard tryin to survive if they have families/houses to pay for.

I cant imagine learning/working for nothing, and for soo many years, that in itself should put people off doing it.

And here. Try working twice the hours so the wife can stop work and tattoo all day with little reward apart from the future.

Saying that this year I have had 4 days away from the studio. Even on my holiday I went in to work.

Once or twice.

We do 12 noon till 8PM five days and 10 till 5pm for the sixth. Doesn't every one do six day weeks (including bank holidays)

Although we don't start till mid day we leave the house at 7.30AM to tend to our 2 horses, go back home for lunch at 11AM and then go to work for 12. A long day not forgetting horses don't do lie ins on a Sunday so no change in time leaving home.

Wouldn't change it for anything. Love it.
